What is a Village?
Villages are grassroots, member-driven, community organizations created for neighbors, by neighbors. They empower older adults to age in community by providing services, engagement, and connection. This holistic approach offers adults 50+ the opportunity to build or maintain a strong social support network of volunteers, resources, service providers, and friendly neighbors. Through volunteer assistance with a range of tasks including transportation, snow removal, and minor home maintenance and social outings and activities. Villages really do it all!
The Village concept began when Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood created Beacon Hill Village in 2002 to serve residents 50 and over by providing services and activities to allow residents to age-in-place. Since that time, the Village movement has expanded to over 200 Villages across the nation with the help of the Village to Village Network which enables communities to establish and manage their own Villages. Each Village caters it's services and structure based on the needs of the area it serves.
