Tony C.
Tony was born in New Mexico but spent the majority of his childhood living in North Carolina. His step-father, who he calls "pops," came into his life when Tony was three years old. Pops was in the military, which allowed Tony's family to travel around the world. In the late '70s, Tony's family moved to the Panama Canal Zone. Tony says, "my favorite part about living in Panama was the culture; all of the 16th-century buildings that gave the city that quaint Spanish feeling plus the amazing food!"
Tony's pops got him into music and vinyl records from a young age. Tony's passion for music turned into a career when he became a disc jockey. He started off playing roller rinks and teen clubs, and now he does many different types of gigs. "Music is a huge part of my life." When asked what his favorite music genre was, Tony said," I wouldn't know if I can pick a favorite genre. I love all types of music. I play a lot of late '70s, 80's and 90's music." Tony likes to interact with the people he plays music for, and he enjoys being able to see people of all ages listen to music together.
When Tony was five years old, he lost one of his kidneys due to a medical condition. For the past 16 years, he has been on dialysis. At the clinic, Tony volunteers as a patient care advocate, where he welcomes the new patients and tries to make them feel comfortable. Tony likes to give the new patients a pair of headphones to listen to music while at the clinic.
Tony first got involved with At Home by High a few years ago during a coffee meet up. While there, Tony met Katie for the first time, and she offered to drive him home. Tony enjoyed being able to meet more people his age who lived around him. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult since our members have not seen each other face-to-face, but Tony still contacts some people he has met through At Home by High. "I talk to Pat on the phone and through Facebook sometimes... James calls me on the phone too! I have been sharing some recipes with him since I love to cook."
In the future, when it will be safe to hold in-person events again, Tony is hoping to be able to DJ an event for us and spread his love of music with all of our members!
