Jason H.
Jason is one of our many amazing volunteers working with At Home By High. Though he attended The Ohio State University, he hasn’t always been a buckeye.
Jason grew up just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio, only settling down in Columbus recently. After meeting his future wife at college, the two set out for success, moving away for work. Now, though, we couldn’t be more grateful to have Jason back in Columbus with us.
Jason says inspiration struck when he first met Katie Beaumont, AHBH’s very own Executive Director, at a Short North Foundation meeting. He shared, “it sounded like a fun opportunity to help some of our neighbors.” He also added that he “had no idea there was so much need in and around our neighborhood,” noting that Katie’s story and good words from friends were what influenced him to jump into the program.
Since volunteering, Jason has helped to organize members’ apartments and maintain lawns around the community, getting to better know and understand the wonderful people involved with AHBH. One of his more memorable days came as a throwback to his time in academia. Hundreds of books had been painstakingly collected by one of our members, and Jason was able to sort through these books and help to donate them to a good cause.
“AHBH is a very easy way to give back,” Jason says. Through specifically tailored volunteer experiences, he helps out by purely doing what he enjoys! There really is “something for everyone.”
Although he says the most rewarding part is being able to appreciate and engage with the neighborhood and community where he lives, Jason still enjoys the little things. From listening to members telling stories about their lives to even being offered a cold beer after mowing one of our member’s lawns, he knows that every simple interaction brings connection and awareness to his life.
If you see Jason walking near his home in Victorian Village, make sure to give him a smile and a wave! As the truly amazing guy he is, he’ll be sure to respond in kind.
